Motrin ran a commercial that was pretty much anti-babywearing. In fact it was quite offensive (to the babywearing community anyway). You can view the video here. Needless to say, there was a huge uproar over the commercial and Motrin (or Johnson and Johnson, the parent company) felt the wrath of babywearing mothers everywhere. I just have to add my 2 cents, (because this is my blog and I can). :)
First of all, if you're babywearing because it's "in style," you totally missed the boat. Second of all, if it hurts, you're doing it wrong. And you should stop and find somebody who can help you. Third, there may be a small percentage of women with neck and back problems who should maybe choose NOT to wear their children, but most of them probably aren't using Motrin (or anything over-the-counter) for their pain anyway. And the majority of women I've talked to who have back/neck issues tell me that babywearing is what helps them because they're not straining themselves by carrying their baby on their hip all the time anymore.
So just for fun and to help me (and my fellow babywearers) feel vindicated, go here to read Motrin's response to the onslaught of calls and emails from us "crazy, style-driven, will-do-anything-to-look-fashionable-mothers." Note the sarcasm. (I actually didn't even get a chance to email them before they'd put up that notice....there were quicker mamas than me out there.)

Who knew I was part of a fad...I just thought it was part of trying to do life with 5 kids and loving having my babe close.
Dandelion Mama (Tracy M) blogged about this earlier this week and one thing she said was this:
"This is just nine ways of wrong, and someone’s head at Motrin is going to Roll. My guess is a hipster twenty-something with no kids thought this was edgy and funny. Epic FAIL."
And this was my comment on her blog:
"Worst part? Assuming babywearing is uncomfortable. When I started using a real babycarrier –you know, the ones they are mocking –all of my pain actually went away. I had been using some dumb hiking backpack thing and it killed my shoulders. Now I can carry my FOUR year old on my back with no shoulder pain. Or hip pain. Or back pain.
You’re right –whoever did this commercial was an idiot."
Right with ya', girl! And I think you reacted very kindly in this post, btw. If it had been me, I'm sure I would have freaked. Please tell me you freaked a little, right?? :)
Cheryl, you know me too well. I totally freaked out. I was fuming the first time I saw the commercial, so I went directly to Motrin's website to send them a nasty email, and I saw their apology and started laughing out loud. Looks like I wasn't the only one fuming. :)
Yes! Ha! I knew it. :)
